1. Service Description

ClariRec is an OCR text recognition tool that provides the following features:

  • Screenshot text recognition (hotkey ⌥S)
  • Clipboard image recognition (hotkey ⌥V)
  • Drag and drop image recognition
  • File import recognition
  • Auto-copy recognition results to clipboard
  • Export recognized text (.txt / .md) to a user-selected location; when a table is detected in the OCR result, Markdown table format is used for export
  • Result display modes (Popup / HUD / Silent)
  • Translation of recognized text (Translate button; optional Auto Translate), via an on-device local translation model (optional, fully offline once downloaded), macOS system translation (macOS 15+), Apple Intelligence translation on supported macOS 26 systems, or a BYOK cloud translation provider
  • Editable recognized text in the result window, including empty-result input mode for direct text translation
  • Low-intrusion translation via macOS Services (“Translate with ClariRec”) and a clipboard translation hotkey (default ⌥T), shown in a compact Mini translation HUD
  • Menu bar quick actions
  • BYOK remote OCR execution (Pro): Setting a configured third-party OCR provider as your default OCR engine, or rerunning a result with one, requires a one-time Pro purchase unless the device has legacy access from configuring remote OCR before version 2.2.1
  • Formula recognition (Pro): Screenshot-to-LaTeX transcription for printed mathematical formulas via BYOK Vision Language Model (VLM) providers, with local KaTeX rendering preview and one-click copy
  • Shortcuts / App Intents: Optional automation actions for clipboard OCR, image-file OCR, and text translation
  • BYOK (Bring Your Own Key): Optional integration with third-party OCR, translation, and formula recognition services (user-configured endpoints, with separate OCR, translation, and formula provider preferences); provider configuration and connection testing are free regardless of Pro status
  • Provider connection testing: Optional credential validation for BYOK providers before or while saving configuration
  • URL Automation (clarirec://): An optional URL scheme that allows external apps or scripts to trigger clipboard OCR, file OCR, or text translation. Processing follows the same local-first / BYOK rules as normal use. File-based URL automation depends on the app being able to access the referenced file under macOS sandbox rules
  • Smart text cleanup: automatic hyphenation repair and paragraph spacing for improved OCR readability
  • Markdown table / list detection: result window can copy detected tables as Markdown tables; on macOS 26, native document recognition may also expose list structures as Markdown lists
  • Pro upgrade (one-time purchase): Non-consumable in-app purchase to unlock Pro features including BYOK remote OCR execution and formula recognition

2. License Grant

  • You are granted a non-exclusive, non-transferable license for personal use.
  • You may install and use this app on macOS devices that you own or control.

3. Usage Restrictions

You agree not to:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble this app
  • Distribute, rent, or resell this app without authorization
  • Use this app for any illegal activities
  • Use this app to infringe on others’ intellectual property or privacy rights

4. Data and Privacy

  • Default Mode (System OCR): All text recognition is performed locally; no OCR content is uploaded to external endpoints.
  • BYOK Mode (OCR / Cloud Translation / Formula Recognition): When you configure third-party providers, proxies, or self-hosted compatible endpoints, (a) screenshot images may be sent to the configured OCR endpoint, (b) recognized text may be sent to the explicitly selected translation endpoint for Translate / Auto Translate, and (c) screenshot images may be sent to a configured VLM provider for formula recognition, depending on the features you use.
  • System Translation (Apple): If you select macOS system translation, or if no third-party translation provider is explicitly selected on supported macOS versions, your text is handled by Apple system services.
  • Apple Intelligence Translation (macOS 26+): On supported systems, translation may use the on-device Apple Intelligence model. Availability depends on device, region, language, and system Apple Intelligence state; no API key is entered in ClariRec for this engine.
  • Local Translation Model (Optional): If you choose to download the optional on-device translation model (~1.1GB, one-time) in Settings, this is a separate, user-initiated network download of model weights. Once downloaded, translation using this engine runs fully offline.
  • Services / Clipboard Translation: Text you select for macOS Services translation, or text currently on the clipboard when you trigger the clipboard translation hotkey, is processed by the currently selected translation engine under the same local-first / BYOK rules as result-window translation.
  • Current Access Model: Screenshot OCR requires Screen Recording permission. Notification permission is optional and requested only for notification-related flows. File import/export access is limited to files or save locations you explicitly choose. macOS Services translation uses the system Services mechanism and does not require Accessibility permission.
  • No Deprecated Permissions: The current release does not request Accessibility, Camera, Microphone, or Apple Events permissions.
  • BYOK Network Use: Outgoing network connections are used only when you configure and use a BYOK OCR, translation, or formula recognition provider; the default System OCR experience remains offline.
  • No ClariRec Content Relay: ClariRec does not operate servers that receive your OCR images, translation text, or formula recognition requests.
  • Automation Inputs: App Intents / Shortcuts process only the clipboard images, image files, or text that you explicitly provide. URL scheme file OCR works only for files the app can access under macOS sandbox rules.
  • Provider Connection Tests: Test Connection, save-validation, and Formula Provider Test flows may send minimal validation requests directly to the provider you configure. These requests validate credentials, endpoints, model access, or formula-response compatibility and do not send your OCR results or screenshots, except that Google Vision validation uses a built-in 1x1 transparent image, GLM-OCR validation uses an in-memory built-in test image, and Formula Provider Test uses a built-in formula test image.
  • Local Diagnostics Only: The app may emit local diagnostic logs for troubleshooting. These diagnostics are not analytics or telemetry and are not sent to ClariRec-operated servers. ClariRec is designed not to intentionally log OCR text, screenshot image content, or API keys.
  • Formula Recognition: Formula recognition is a user-initiated action that sends the current screenshot image to your configured BYOK VLM provider. The recognized LaTeX result is rendered locally via bundled KaTeX resources; no network requests are made for rendering. ClariRec does not relay, store, or log the formula recognition request or response content.
  • Current App Store releases do not persist OCR history; OCR results are discarded after display unless you explicitly export them.
  • If you use Export, the output file is saved only to the location you explicitly choose.
  • API keys you provide are stored securely in macOS Keychain and are never transmitted to ClariRec developers.
  • See our Privacy Policy for details.

4.1 Third-Party Services (BYOK)

When using BYOK features, you agree to:

  • The terms of service and privacy policies of the third-party providers you configure
  • Take responsibility for managing your own API keys and usage
  • Understand the provider roles in the current release: DeepL, Mercury-2, OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepSeek, GLM, Grok, and OpenRouter are translation-only; GLM-OCR, Azure, Baidu OCR, and Google Cloud Vision are OCR-only; Mistral AI may be used for OCR and translation; Custom Vision API and Qwen may be used for OCR, translation, and formula recognition when configured. GLM translation and GLM-OCR use separate models, settings, and credentials, so configuring or switching one does not affect the other
  • Understand that actually executing BYOK remote OCR (as the default engine or a result rerun) requires ClariRec Pro unless the device has legacy access; provider configuration, connection testing, and BYOK translation remain free
  • Understand that ClariRec is not responsible for the data handling practices of third-party providers (including how they handle OCR images, translation text, or formula recognition requests)

5. Intellectual Property

  • The intellectual property of this app and its content belongs to the developer.
  • This app is proprietary software. All rights reserved.

6. Disclaimer

  • This app is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind.
  • The developer is not liable for any direct or indirect damages arising from the use of this app.
  • OCR recognition accuracy is affected by image quality, fonts, languages, and other factors.
  • Translation results may be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading. You should verify translations before relying on them, especially for legal, medical, financial, or safety-critical use cases.
  • BYOK Disclaimer: When using third-party providers (OCR / Cloud Translation / Formula Recognition), you are responsible for:
    • API costs incurred from your usage
    • Compliance with third-party providers’ terms of service
    • Security of your API keys
    • Any data sent to third-party providers (including screenshot images for OCR and/or formula recognition, and/or text for translation)
    • Any validation requests made through provider connection testing or Formula Provider Test, including built-in test images
  • In-App Purchase Disclaimer: The Pro upgrade is a one-time non-consumable purchase. It unlocks Pro features (such as BYOK remote OCR execution and formula recognition) within the app. BYOK API costs are separate and remain your responsibility.

7. Termination

  • You may terminate use at any time by uninstalling the app.
  • If you violate these terms, the developer reserves the right to terminate your license.

8. Changes to Terms

If these terms are modified, changes will be announced in the release notes with app updates. Continued use constitutes acceptance of the modified terms.
